About a half-an-hour later, Chase pulled up in front of the Monroes’ house. Tiffany and I exited the back seat, and I removed a decorative plastic plate the size of a turkey platter out of the trunk of the car and rearranged the cookies that had toppled on the ride over. Atop the platter now were tall stacks of cookies that looked as if they might collapse like a house of cards. I’d intentionally piled them high to make for an unstable balance.

When Sandy came to the door, she had a surprised expression on her face. “You two again?”

Tiffany visibly winced at the implication we were wearing out our welcome. I truly hoped we would get some beneficial information on our first try at eavesdropping on Sandy and Manuel, because I didn’t particularly want to go through this procedure again. And talking Tiffany into repeating the process might not be an easy task. If, indeed, it was possible at all.

“Yes,” Tiffany finally said. “We apologize for the intrusion. Grams decided to make some oatmeal cookies for you. She baked a lot so you could freeze some and thaw them out later when you were hungry for more.”

“Oh, that is so sweet of you, Rapella,” she said to me. She then turned to Tiffany and continued in what sounded like a persecuted tone. “But I thought you knew we had to swear off sugar several years ago. When Trey was diagnosed as a type II diabetic, I stopped buying anything with sugar in it. Even avoiding sugar wasn’t enough, and he started taking insulin injections not long before his death.”

Lucky for you, he’s dead now, so you can resume eating sugar. I had to bite my tongue to not say what I was thinking.

“Sorry, I forgot about that,” Tiffany said.

Before Sandy could respond, I said, “Lucky for you, I used my sugar-free recipe, because I avoid sugar as much as possible, too. My husband is a borderline diabetic, and we both have to watch our weight.” As Sandy stared at me, the invisible cat that had Tiffany’s tongue yesterday appeared to have Sandy’s today. When she finally opened her mouth to speak, I cut her off. “I’ll set this on your kitchen table while Tiffany tells you a hilarious joke she told me this morning.”

“I can take it to―”

Interrupting Sandy as I continued walking toward her kitchen, I said, “No. It’s best I don’t try to pass them over to you. I wasn’t thinking straight when I piled them so high. One false move and you’ll be vacuuming cookie crumbs out of your carpet for days. Go ahead, Tiffany, and tell her that funny joke you told me earlier.”

Tiffany shot me a stunned look. I’d thought surely the girl knew one joke. It didn’t even have to be humorous. She could act like it tickled her funny bone, even if it didn’t seem to amuse her friend. I tell jokes all the time that no one but me finds hysterical.

I rushed
